La Cazuela de la Esparteria



La Cazuela de la Esparteria (Calle Rodriguez Marín, 16)
• A very nice, casual and central restaurant serving traditional food from Spain and Cordoba.
• They list their specialities as aubergines with salmon (berenjenas con salmon) and artichokes with bull’s tail (alcachofas con rabo de todo) but the scrambled egg dishes (revueltos) are also really delicious.

La Boca (Paseo de la Ribera, 24)
• A small, modern restaurant on the river.
• Does Spanish food with a twist.
• Uses organic produce and has a selection of organic wines.

El Sotano



El Sotano (Plaza de la Corredera)
• A very popular restaurant with a huge terrace.
• Does a variety of Spanish and Andalusian staples.
• Highly recommended dishes include aubergines in honey (berenjenas con miel) and spinach croquettes (croquetas de espinacas)
• Portions can be very large, so it’s often best to order just a few dishes and if you’re still hungry you can always order more!

Taberna La Verdad



Taberna La Verdad (Calle Mendez Pelayo, 1)
• Excellent, really popular, central restaurant.
• Serves Spanish and Andalusian food.
• Recommended dishes include fresh anchovies in vinegar (boquerones en vinagre) and pork fillet in salsa verde (puntos de solomillo en salsa verde)
• Again, the portions are very big.

Taberna El Juramento



Taberna El Juramento (Calle Juramento, 6)
• Central restaurant serving Spanish and Andalusian food.
• The restaurant’s speciality is stuffed peppers (pimientos rellenos)
• Has a lovely interior courtyard.

Frida



Frida (Ronda de Isasa, 6)
• New, authentic Mexican restaurant on the river.
• Serves full meals and Mexican tapas.
• Serves a range of Mexican drinks.

Ayesta



Ayesta (Enrique Romero de Torres, 7)
• Lovely restaurant on the river.
• Serves a wide selection of vegetarian dishes.
• Recommended dishes are their rices, peroles, which serve a minimum of two people and very tasty brownies.

La Pataita de Antonio



La Pataita de Antonio (Calle Barroso, 3)
• Tapas bar with live flamenco shows on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 10pm
• Interesting tapas including highly-recommended chocolate croquettes (croquetas de chocolate)

• Service of tapas at the bar and sit down food either in an informal or formal setting.

Sociedad de Plateros (Calle Maria Auxiliadora, 25)
• Lovely, traditional restaurant towards the outskirts of the city.
• Serves a range of traditional dishes and has an entire menu of cod dishes, their specialty.
• They also serve their own fino, a pale dry sherry.

The Mosque (La Mezquita)

•Cordoba’s most famous monument and a World Heritage Site.

•Originally a pagan temple, then a Visigoth Christian Church. On the arrival of the Moors, they built a mosque on the site. When Al-Andalus was conquered by the Catholic Monarchs it was converted into a Roman Catholic church and it is now Cordoba’s Cathedral.

•It is one of the best examples of Moorish architecture in Spain and has a beautiful courtyard.

•Opening hours: Monday – Saturday 10.00 am - 6.30pm
Sunday 9.00am – 10.15am and 2.00pm – 7.00pm

•Entrance price: Adults €8
Children over 10, retired visitors etc €2
Children under 10 are free

The Fortress of the Catholic Monarchs (El Alcazar de los Reyes Catolicos)





• This was one of the primary residences of Ferdinand and Isabela, the Catholic Monarchs during the height of Spain’s power in the early 16th century.

• It was originally built by the Visigoths and expanded by the Moors.

• It was used as a tribunal during the Spanish Inquisition.

• It is said that it was here that Christopher Columbus asked Ferdinand and Isabela for funding for his expedition which lead him to discover America.

• On display are some beautiful mosaics uncovered from the Corredera Square.

• The gardens are beautiful to stroll around.

• Opening hours: Monday – Friday 9.00am – 2.00 pm

Medinat Al-zahara


• These are the ruins of a city built by the Caliphate of Cordoba just eight miles from the city.

• It is said he built the city for his favourite wife, Azahara.


• It was built between 936-940 AD.

• Excavations began in the 1910s and it is believed that only 10% of the original city has been uncovered.

• At the time, it was the largest city built from scratch in Western Europe, demonstrating the power of the Caliphate of Cordoba.

• It has fantastic examples of Moorish architecture.

• Entrance to the site and interpretive centre is free. Due to the fact that it’s outside Cordoba, there is a tourist bus which provides transport to and from the ruins.

On Tuesdays – Saturdays: The bus leaves the city at 10.15am and arrives back at 1.45pm and then again at 5pm until 8.30pm

On Sundays: 9.30 am until 1pm and 10.15am until 1.45pm

The bus costs €7 for adults and €3.50 for children between the ages of 5 and 12 but there are discounts for booking online.

Palacio de Viana




• Originally the residence of a noble family from the 14th century.



• The actual house itself is not all that impressive but the series of different courtyards are really beautiful and you can get a ticket just to have a wander through these.



• Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday 9.00am – 3pm



• Entrance price: Full visit €6 / Courtyards only €3

Archeological Museum (Museo Arqueologico)




• Displays of archeological finds from Cordoba from prehistoric times up to the Arab rule.



• Opening hours: Wednesday – Saturday 9.30am – 8.30pm and Tuesdays 2.30pm – 8.30pm
Sunday 9.00am – 2.30pm



• Entrance is free for EU citizens.

Al-Andalus Museum (La Torre de Calahorra)



• A museum looking at how Christians, Jews and Muslims lived together in Medieval Cordoba housed in a 13th century tower.


• Opening hours: Mondays – Sundays 10.00am – 2.00pm and 4.30pm – 8.30pm


• Entrance price: Adults €4.50

House of the Sepharad (Casa Sefardi)




• A cultural centre which examines the lives of the Jewish community in Cordoba.



• It is close to the old Synagogue which can also be visited.



• Opening hours: Monday to Saturday 11.00am – 6.00pm
Sundays 11.00am -2.00pm



The Synagogue: Tuesday – Sunday 9.30am – 2.00pm and 3.30pm – 5.30pm



• Entrance price: Adults €4



Entrance to the Synagogue is free to EU citizens

Corredera Square (La Plaza de la Corredera)



• The site of this square was once the entrance to a Roman amphitheatre.


• It was also once a bullring.


• It is designed in a style which is typical in the north of Spain, but it is the only one of its kind in Andalucia.


• This square houses many different bars and tapas restaurants with huge terraces and is a lively hub until about 2am.

The Jewish Quarter (La Juderia)



• The old part of the city, surrounding the Mosque, is known as the Jewish Quarter.


• It’s a beautiful part of the city, filled with winding streets and old, traditional buildings.


• A small minority of the bars and restaurants around the Jewish Quarter can be tourist traps, but in general the majority of places are not much more expensive than in the centre.

• Original Arab baths which are still in use and where you can also get massages.


• It also has a traditional Arab tea room.
